Thermocouple Vacuum Feedthrough
Thermocouple vacuum feedthroughs are widely used for temperature measurements in vacuum applications. We can make a sealed thermocouple feedthrough to any length your application requires. We have technology to seal any stranded or solid conductor thermocouple in any standard insulation material like glass braid, PVC and Teflon. We can also manufacture many types of thermocouple connectors such as d-sub connectors, circular mil spec connectors and standard disconnects.
Our technical team can assist you with your thermocouple vacuum feedthrough requirements. Whether you require a standard feedthrough or something more custom, contact our team today.
Thermocouple Vacuum Feedthrough
Thermocouple feedthroughs are widely used for temperature measurements in vacuum and pressure applications. When using a thermometer wouldn’t be practical but data recording is necessary, the temperature cannot be measured directly but can be calculated from a thermoelectric voltage.
How does it work?
The thermoelectric voltage is generated due to charge separation (EMF) caused by a temperature difference between the two ends of an electrical conductor. Using thermocouple feedthroughs the thermoelectric voltage (EMF) can be transmitted from the inside of a chamber to an external indicating instrument. The external instrumentation can then evaluate the strength of the EMF and thus yielding a temperature measurement.
Thermocouple Feedthrough Types
A thermocouple vacuum feedthrough uses two different metals that conduct electricity at different rates. A variety of noble and base metals and alloys can be used to create thermocouple feedthroughs depending on the application. A high thermoelectric voltage, corrosion resistance and linearity are the most important factors for the selection of the material combination. Common alloys include constantan (copper and nickel), Alumel (nickel, aluminium and manganese) and Chromel (nickel and chrome).
The most common thermocouple feedthroughs are base metal thermocouples:
- Type J Thermocouple Feedthroughs
- Type K Thermocouple Feedthroughs
- Type T Thermocouple Feedthroughs
- Type E Thermocouple Feedthroughs
We also offer noble metal thermocouples, which include:
- Type R thermocouple feedthroughs
- Type S Thermocouple Feedthroughs
- Type C Thermocouple Feedthroughs
Thermocouple Feedthrough Applications
Thermocouple feedthroughs are commonly used in vacuum environments but thermocouple pressure feedthroughs are also available in applications with pressure chambers. Some application examples of where our thermocouple feedthrough are used:
- Vacuum gauges
- Energy research
- Fuel Tanks
- Power generation measurement and control
- Furnaces
- Gas Turbines
- In-vacuum coating
- Semiconductor processing equipment
- Aerospace
- LED and Solar processing equipment
- Industrial Equipment
When you are selecting a thermocouple, you need to consider:
- Temperature
- Vibration and abrasion resistance
- Chemical resistance of the thermocouple and insulation
- Installation requirements
Most of our thermocouple vacuum feedthroughs are custom but we also have a variety of seals available from stock. Please contact our sales team for further assistance with your thermocouple vacuum feedthroughs requirements.
